SOUTHERN UTAH PISTOL & REVOLVER CLUB

The “Southern Utah Pistol & Revolver” club is a “U.S. Practical Shooting Association” affiliated Practical Shooting club. Practical Shooting matches are primarily pistol matches however rifles and shotguns are sometimes used at special matches.

Practical pistol shooting is an International shooting sport that developed out of the “combat shooting” matches held in the American Southwest in the 1970’s. Practical shooting has evolved into an Olympic-style sport that stresses safe gun handling in action. Practical shooting matches are based on the principles of accuracy, power, and speed, with courses of fire (stages) that offer action not found in other shooting disciplines such as drawing from a holster, movement by the shooter, moving targets and multiple targets at ranges from 3 to 50 yards. Matches are varied and are based on the defensive use of the handgun.

The Southern Utah Pistol & Revolver club holds matches on the 1st, 3rd and sometimes on the 5th Saturdays of the month at the “Southern Utah Shooting Sports Park” located adjacent to the “Washington County Regional Park” (Fair Grounds). Matches start at 9:00 A.M. in the Summer and 10:00 A.M. in the winter. Matches generally consist of 4 or 5 stages and require approximately 150 rounds to complete.

Any person of reputable character who practices safe gun handling, good sportsmanship and will follow the R.O.’S (Range officer)commands is welcome to shoot with the SUPR club. Match fees vary from approximately $10.00 to $15.00. If you are new to this sport we highly recommend that you watch a match before you decided to participate; participation is at the discretion of the Chief Range Officer.

Besides a reliable handgun and ammunition you will also need a suitable holster that covers the trigger guard, three or more extra magazines or speed loaders, magazine pouches, ear & eye protection and a gun case. The predominant handgun found in USPSA competition is the Colt 1911 style .45, the 9mm, .40 S&W, .38 super and some revolvers are seen in competition. The minimum caliber that can beused in competition is 9mm. We recommend that you determine what is the best choice for you as you begin to compete.

Remember: “shoot straight, shoot fast and above all shoot safe”.
